• Imagine Intelligent Materials finalist in Mondial Tech Startup Awards
  • Mondial Tech is the most prestigious launch event for new automotive technologies in the world
  • Imagine was a finalist at Startup Autobahn in July 2018
  • Imagine will unveil an improved version of its Human Machine Interface (HMI) sensing textile developed for Daimler

Melbourne, September 26: AGIA founding member Imagine Intelligent Materials, the Geelong-based graphene sensing company, is one of eight invited finalists in the Industry 4.0 category of the Mondial Tech Startup Awards, to be held in Paris between October 2 and 6.

The Mondial Tech conference is dedicated to fostering innovation throughout the mobility value chain. It is aimed at helping all participants in the automotive value chain work closer together to shape the future of transportation.

Chris Gilbey, CEO of Imagine, said, “Over the past year we have been finalists in several global pitching competitions. Regardless of winning or losing, making the cut is the most important part. Being able to present our technology in front of key decision-makers from the biggest manufacturing companies in the world has helped fast-track business development for Imagine at an amazing pace.

“At Plug and Play in Silicon Valley we were identified as strategically important to four multibillion-dollar companies. Each of them is a global market leader in a significant market vertical and we are now in commercial negotiations with all of them.”

The pitch at Mondial Tech will be presented by Jaakko Kaidesoja, Imagine’s Chief Revenue Officer and head of the company’s Finnish subsidiary company. “We presented a prototype ‘smart seat’ to Daimler at Startup Autobahn in Stuttgart that features our unique graphene Human Machine Interface,” said Kaidesoja. “That has opened the door for us to a number
of new opportunities in the global automotive sensing market and the smart building market.

“Achieving even modest attachment rates in either of these markets will deliver massive positive revenue impact for Imagine. We don’t need to win the startup competition to get commercial traction – the technology demonstrator tells the story extremely well itself –
but it would certainly be nice if we were to win the competition, too.”

Phil Aitchison, Head of R&D at Imagine, said, “Developing the HMI for Daimler in our smart seat pushed our engineering capabilities beyond what I thought was possible at the time. But we delivered what was needed, and it has led to our platform technology taking a big leap forward. I am convinced that Imagine is now establishing a position as a leader in large scale sensing.”

About Imagine Intelligent Materials:

Imagine IM is a global leader in graphene sensing technology. Imagine integrates its ability to manufacture graphene nanoplatelets at low cost, while its signal processing capabilities deliver large-scale sensing for smart buildings, infrastructure and mobility.

The company was founded in 2014 by a group of scientists and engineers led by Chris Gilbey and Phil Aitchison, with a vision to deliver large-scale graphene products and solutions. Imagine IM has a B2B licensing and certification business model. It is the first company in the world to develop conductive geosynthetic materials for the resources industry using functionalised graphene.

About graphene:

Graphene’s discoverers were awarded the Nobel Prize in 2010. Graphene is the first two-dimensional material and is classed as a “super-material”, offering extremely high electrical and thermal conductivity, hydrophobicity, strength, and impermeability to all gases.
